Dr. Bridget Hamilton

“Primum non nocere: attending to consumer perspectives on aggression in psychiatry”

   

KN_Anna BjorkdahlAssociate Professor Bridget Hamilton is a specialist mental health nurse who has worked in public sector clinical settings for more than 30 years. She takes this close connection to the realities of practice into her teaching and research, as Director of the Centre for Psychiatric Nursing, within the School of Health Sciences, University of Melbourne.

Her academic work has combined fine-grained study of everyday mental health nursing practices with interventions designed to reduce coercion and to orient practice towards personal recovery. She values knowledge that is co-produced between clinicians and consumers/service users. She has published more than 40 papers and a book, many of these in partnership with consumer academics, and has taught in co-produced postgraduate courses.

Bridget leads the evaluation of Safewards implementation across Victoria, within a service system for community of more than 4 million people. Her current academic work addresses nursing practices associated with: strengths focused assessments, new MH legislation, engagement strategies and psychotherapeutic essential skills for nurses, consumer decision-making regarding medications and clinical supervision approaches for shift-working nurses.
