Mr. KevinMcKennaKevin Mc Kenna, Lecturer, Programme Director, Psychiatric Nursing, School of Health and Science, Dundalk Institute of Technology, Ireland

Kevin has extensive healthcare experience in Ireland and the USA in various clinical settings including Psychiatry, Medical/Surgical, Intellectual Disability and Care of Elderly. His experience has included roles in practice, administration, education, and research.

In addition to professional training as a nurse, he holds undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Health Administration and post graduate degrees in Psychology, and Education.

He has been engaged in the management of aggression and violence within clinical care settings since 1988 from clinical, academic, teaching, and research perspectives and is currently completing doctoral studies investigating the integration of evidence-based best practice training as part of a organisational governance response to the problem.

He has participated and led a number of national and international initiatives related to aggression and violence within healthcare including authoring ‘Linking Service and Safety’, the national strategy for the management of aggression and violence within the Irish health service, and developing the first academically accredited degree programme in the professional management of aggression and violence.

He serves as subject expert to the Workplace Violence Governance Group of the Irish Health Service, is a member of the European Violence in Psychiatry Research Group, and a an executive steering group member of the European Network for Training in Management of Aggression. He has chaired and contributed to international conferences, authored a number of papers and book chapters related to aggression and violence within healthcare, and continues to be actively researching in this area.
