Dr Paterson is an internationally acknowledged expert on the prevention and management of violence in health and social care as a political, social and clinical problem.

An experienced practitioner and researcher he has published more than 100 papers, research reports and chapters on themes around violence prevention including seminal studies evaluating training and investigating restraint related deaths.

He is regularly instructed as an expert advisor and expert witness by government bodies in the UK and elsewhere. His current interests include how cultures of care can become corrupted leading to the misuse of restraint and the development and implementation of trauma informed care.
